Catherine Ford was born in Bloomsbury, London; her father had abandoned her family and she was raised by her mother, grandmother and godparents. While she was a small girl, Catherine Ford struggled with an obsessional disorder. She also experienced anxiety because of the word"association. Ford started to become fascinated by acting when she was a teenager and enrolled in the National Youth Theatre. Ford gained entry to the Sylvia Young Theatre School, however, she decided after one week that she was a poor fit there. Ford rather than applying for admission to Central School of Speech and Drama and winning a placement at the third time she applied for and was awarded acceptance to Central School of Speech and Drama. Her classmate was Shaun Dingwall, who would play a part as Pete Tyler in Doctor Who. Ford didn't finish her studies until 1993. But, by 1991, Ford had made her first appearance on TV in an episode of Surgical Spirit. At that time, Ford adopted the stage name Catherine Tate. Tate made appearances on television during the Nineties with shows such as The Bill and Men Behaving Badly. In addition to her regular stage work, Tate was a part of the Royal Shakespeare Company in 2000-2001. Tate's stand-up comedy that she started adding to her repertoire in 1996, quickly gained her attention.
